Today is a sad day. My grandpa, Hershel Collins, passed away this morning. He turned 79 six days ago.

I'm going to miss him GREATLY. He's the one that got me interested in working on things and fixing them. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be such a gear head now. I remember helping him fix lawnmowers in our back yard when I was 7 or 8. He taught me SO much, and loved me til the end. He was a great man, a Korean war veteran. The amount of people that have come by our house today to talk with us has reminded me just how good of a guy he was. He always had a joke to tell or a prank to pull. :lmao: He would help you with anything too. In fact, that's what he was doing when he passed away. My grandma had bought groceries and sat them on the back porch. She told him not to worry about them, that she would take them in the house. Being the helpful person he was, he had to do it for her.

When he was helping take the groceries in, he fell off the back porch. We don't know if he had a heart attack that caused him to fall, or if he just fell and passed from severe trauma. Either way, it was quick. By the time my grandma ran (yes, ran) from her truck to the porch (about 30 feet) to give him CPR, he was unresponsive. I guess that's the best way to go.

My other grandpa passed away about 3 years ago now, and in a way, that was harder to deal with than this. He was in GREAT health for his age, and passed away from a sudden heart attack after planting a field of crops all day long in the heat.

It was a huge shock to us all. Hershel has been in bad health for a while now. He had open heart surgery 10 years ago, suffered from congestive heart failure, various respiratory issues, and had recently been diagnosed with alzheimer's and parkinson's disease. Like my grandma said, "I've been dreading this day for a loooooong time." He was a terriffic guy, and will be missed by many.

R.I.P. Hershel Collins. 1929-2008
